Titan Submarine Implosion

On June 18, 2023  the Titan submarine that was carrying three tourists, the submersibles pilot, and a Titanic expert tragically imploded. The Titan sub imploded due to the pressure hull not being able to withstand all of the pressure. When the Titan sub was 3,500 meters below sea level, communication was lost and only a few hundred feet after that is it was expected to have imploded. This incident devastated the families as they lost their loved ones. 

Hawaiian Wildfires

Due to harsh windy weather conditions, multiple major wildfires spread across the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Hawaii. The drastic wildfires occurred in August of 2023 and hundreds of structures were damaged or burnt completely. The wildfires caused a plethora of fatalities and injuries. Some contact services such as 911, landlines, and cellular devices were lost due to the wind and wildfires. In Hawaii, more than 20,00 acres were burned due to 1,000 ignitions. 90% of the dryland forests have been wiped out due to the fires. In an attempt to recover the islands and the injured and displaced people the most damaged area, Lahaina, was closed down and a substantial hotel partnered with the Red Cross to help the injured and misplaced. It will be a long and jarring process after the islands will heal.

India landing on the moon

India’s first spacecraft landing on the moon was a huge accomplishment for the Indian community. Two people from India, Vikram and Pragyan, landed the spacecraft Chandrayaan-3 in the southern polar region of the moon in August. The Indian spacecraft was the fourth country to land on the moon and the first to ever land in that region. The people of India took great pride in their space program and all of the achievements they have reached. Breanna Covarrubias, a junior at Sultana High School, stated. “I think that it is good for India and the people of India to have this kind of achievement. They should be proud.”

NASA space trip announcement

NASA announced that they will soon be making a trip to the moon with Artemis. The new generation of explorers will be making a global alliance and exploring the depths of space for the benefit of everyone. NASA is doing this project for economic benefits such as supporting job growth, fueling new industries, and furthering the demand for a skilled workforce. They plan on exploring more of the moon than ever done before. Senior, Kyla Willard said, “I believe that this space exploration will be good for the space community because it will let them learn new things.”

Writers strike

Screenwriters were on strike for nearly five months until a contract was signed, the the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers complied with their negotiations for compensation, increased residuals, staff size, and control over artificial intelligence. They believed they deserved better pay for what they created. The agreement that was reached was considered a win by the leaders and they were widely praised. The hope for the change within the writing industry is better working treatment and better pay results. While on strike the writers would not promote anything and also were forgoing paychecks. Once the agreement was signed and the screenwriters were satisfied with the negotiations of thee writers guild, the writers returned back to work.
