Two children reported missing from a San Antonio-area city were recovered safely at a Houston-area apartment complex Thursday, after Texas Department of Public Safety agents used automated license plate reader technology to track the suspect’s vehicle across hundreds of miles.
The search began Monday in Converse, a city in Bexar County, when the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services requested DPS assistance for a missing persons case involving a 15-year-old and a 1-year-old child. Agents quickly moved to issue a statewide AMBER Alert, which officials say produced thousands of public tips and accelerated the investigation significantly.
Using data captured by Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) positioned along Texas roadways, DPS investigators were able to identify a suspect vehicle and trace its movement from Converse toward the Houston metro area. San Antonio-based agents coordinated directly with their Houston counterparts, who responded to the apartment complex location — where both children were found safe Thursday afternoon.
The City of Houston holds an active contract with Flock Safety, one of the country’s leading ALPR technology providers. The cameras continuously photograph license plates and cross-reference them against law enforcement databases in real time, allowing investigators to reconstruct a vehicle’s recent travel path without live surveillance.
While the technology played a decisive role in recovering the children, ALPR systems have drawn criticism from privacy advocates who argue the cameras collect location data on millions of innocent civilians and can be misused. Critics also point to safety concerns related to the infrastructure itself.
DPS confirmed the investigation remains ongoing and declined to release the name or status of any suspect. No further details about the circumstances of the case have been made public at this time.
Officials thanked the Texas public for responding to the emergency alert, stating that community engagement directly contributed to the safe recovery of both children.
