A 7-year-old Michigan boy is dead, and his parents are facing second-degree murder charges after authorities say years of alleged neglect left the child morbidly obese and with a failing heart — while the family’s dog reportedly received more medical attention than he ever did.
Casper Jacob Shane O’Brien was found unresponsive at his Flint Township home on November 4, 2025. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was just over 4 feet tall and weighed 255 pounds at the time of his death — more than three times the healthy weight range for a child his age, according to CDC standards.
Medical examiners determined the cause of death to be dilated cardiomyopathy, a serious condition in which the heart’s chambers stretch and weaken — a condition that can be directly linked to severe obesity.
His parents, Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, were arrested and are being held without bond at Genesee County Jail. They face charges including second-degree murder.
“On the face of it, this is cruel and extreme suffering from this child caused by the neglect of the parents.” — Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says Casper had only been taken to a doctor once in his entire life. Despite the father reportedly holding a steady job with full health insurance, the child never had a pediatrician. Child Protective Services had never been called to the home. According to Leyton, these children essentially did not exist in the eyes of the government.
What makes the case even more chilling: on the very morning Casper died, the parents allegedly placed a call to their veterinarian to arrange care for their dog.
The couple also has a 5-year-old daughter. Authorities have not disclosed details about her current welfare or placement.
Casper’s obituary remembered him as a bright and loving boy whose joyful spirit touched everyone around him. He will not be forgotten.
Damien and Jessica O’Brien are expected back in court on July 2.
