A tragedy that has left an entire community in shock has come to light in Mechanicville, New York, where a 64-year-old grandmother, Amy Steadman, is suspected of deliberately ending the lives of her daughter and four grandchildren before taking her own life.
Mechanicville Police Chief Bill Rabbitt confirmed during a press conference that the bodies of Sarah Myers and her four children — Harper Harmon, 13; Hudson Harmon, 11; and twins Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon, both 10 — were discovered following a welfare check. A concerned neighbor had not seen the family in several days and alerted authorities. By the time officers arrived, the victims had been deceased for an extended period, and the state of decomposition made immediate identification impossible.
Investigators recovered a handwritten note along with other circumstantial evidence strongly pointing to Steadman’s involvement. According to authorities, the deaths appear to have been caused by prescription and over-the-counter medications. One child was also found to have been stabbed.
Court documents reveal that Myers and the children’s father, Brady Harmon, divorced in 2020. Under their custody arrangement, Myers held custody during the school year, while Harmon was entitled to have the children with him from July through September. Sources indicate that Steadman harbored deep resentment toward Harmon, who had recently been granted custody for the summer — a transition the family was just days away from completing.
Brady Harmon, currently residing in Utah, described the unbearable moment when hope turned to devastation. He said the children had been kept from him for some time, with contact limited to occasional video calls. He now wishes to lay them to rest in Utah.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities await final autopsy and toxicology results.
