BOSTON, Massachusetts — If you are planning to be on the road Tuesday evening, you may want to leave early or wait it out.
A storm system is moving into New England and could turn dangerous right around rush hour. The National Weather Service in Boston says scattered severe thunderstorms are possible from 4 PM Tuesday through 4 AM Wednesday — hitting exactly when roads are at their busiest.
What the Storms Could Bring
The biggest threat is damaging wind gusts capable of snapping tree limbs and knocking out power.
Heavy rainfall could flood streets quickly, especially in cities where drainage systems get overwhelmed fast. Forecasters are also noting a low risk for isolated hail and a brief tornado, though winds remain the top concern.
Western and central Massachusetts carry a Level 2 Slight Risk. The Boston metro, Worcester, Providence, and much of eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island fall under a Level 1 Marginal Risk.
Communities specifically mentioned include Springfield, Worcester, Boston, Lowell, Fitchburg, and Providence.
What You Should Do Before 4 PM
Not every area will see severe weather, but any storm that develops could strengthen quickly.
Interstates 90, 91, 93, 95, and Route 128 could all become hazardous as visibility drops and water pools on roadways.
Before storms arrive, secure anything outside that could blow around, charge your phone, and make sure emergency weather alerts are turned on.
Storms are expected to push offshore by early Wednesday morning. However, additional watches or warnings could be issued throughout Tuesday as forecasters track storm development in real time.
