A southwest Houston neighborhood turned into a crime scene Friday after a suspected burglar was shot and killed — not by police, but by an armed civilian who had been called by the homeowner himself.
The deadly confrontation began when a homeowner in the 11000 block of Bandlon Drive noticed on his security cameras that someone was inside his house. It was already the second time that day his property had been targeted. An earlier burglary attempt had occurred around 7 a.m., but the suspects fled before officers could arrive.
This time, the homeowner did not wait.
He called his neighbor, who then picked up his brother, and together the two men went to confront the suspects directly. According to Houston Police Department, the burglary suspects ran down the street — and the two men followed them by vehicle.
The chase ended in a confrontation. At some point during that encounter, one of the two men opened fire.
One suspect was struck. He managed to jump a fence despite being wounded, but did not survive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It remains unclear whether the neighbor or his brother fired the shot, and HPD has not confirmed the exact number of suspects involved.
A second suspect is still on the run.
Investigators identified multiple crime scenes across the area — including the original location on Bandlon Drive, a secondary scene on nearby High Star Drive, and a crashed vehicle found along Cinnabar Drive.
As of now, no arrests have been made. HPD is continuing its investigation into the shooting, including whether the use of deadly force was legally justified under Texas law.
Texas is a Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground state, which can allow individuals to use deadly force in certain situations — but investigators will determine whether those circumstances apply here.
The identity of the deceased suspect has not been released.
