A Harris County sheriff’s deputy suffered serious injuries early Saturday after a suspected impaired driver struck him while he was working a fatal pedestrian crash scene on Old Bammel Road near the Beltway 8 area.
Deputy on foot when struck
The deputy was outside his vehicle, canvassing the scene of an earlier fatal collision involving a pedestrian, when a passing driver struck him. Emergency responders transported the injured deputy to a nearby hospital, where officials confirmed his condition was serious but non-life-threatening. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy was stable as of Saturday afternoon.
Suspected drunk driver arrested at scene
Deputies working the area quickly detained the driver. The man displayed visible signs of impairment, prompting an immediate arrest. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to a local detention facility. Authorities said charges related to driving under the influence are expected once the investigation concludes.
Two serious incidents, one location
The deputy was originally called to investigate a separate fatal pedestrian crash on the same stretch of Old Bammel Road. That earlier collision had already claimed at least one life before the deputy himself was struck. Traffic in the area was disrupted for several hours as multiple agencies worked to secure the scene and gather evidence.
Investigation ongoing
As of Sunday, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office continued investigating both incidents. The identities of the deceased pedestrian and the arrested driver have not been released pending family notification. Officials are urging drivers to slow down and stay alert near active emergency scenes — a reminder that is now more urgent than ever.
