A Missouri mother is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say her 1-year-old daughter died from severe malnourishment and her 3-year-old child was found in similarly critical condition inside their apartment.
According to investigators, emergency responders were dispatched to a residence in St. Louis after a call reporting that a young child was unresponsive and breathing slowly. When officers arrived, they found the 1-year-old girl lying on the living room floor with no signs of life. A second child, a 3-year-old girl, was also inside the home.
Authorities said both children appeared extremely underweight and showed signs of severe neglect. The younger child was rushed to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Investigators noted that the girl weighed only 10 pounds, far below the expected weight range for a child her age.
The 3-year-old sibling was also transported for medical treatment. Officials reported that she weighed significantly less than what is considered healthy for her age and displayed physical signs commonly associated with prolonged malnutrition. She remains under medical care.
During the investigation, authorities learned that neither child had reportedly received medical attention for approximately one year. Detectives stated that the mother acknowledged concerns about her older child’s weight in the past and had previously received guidance regarding proper nutrition.
Investigators allege that the younger child’s daily diet primarily consisted of yogurt, fruit pouches, and vegetable pouches. Authorities believe the amount of food provided was far below what is necessary for normal growth and development.
Police further stated that the child’s health had noticeably declined in the weeks leading up to her death, yet medical treatment was allegedly never sought. Additional concerns were raised after officers reportedly observed physical conditions indicating the child had been bedridden for extended periods.
The mother, 29-year-old Sausha Mia Myers, has been charged with multiple counts of child abuse and neglect resulting in serious physical injury. She was taken into custody and is being held without bond.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the official cause of death. Investigators indicated that additional charges could be filed as the case continues.
