A north Harris County woman is facing an intoxication manslaughter charge after authorities say she was driving drunk and at nearly twice the posted speed limit when her vehicle crashed Wednesday night — killing the man she had been in a common-law marriage with for six years.
The crash happened around 11 p.m. on Century Plaza near Woodham Drive. According to investigators, the woman was driving eastbound when she lost control of her vehicle. The car veered off the road and slammed into a grassy median.
Her 30-year-old passenger was ejected from the vehicle on impact. He was not wearing a seat belt. Paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene. The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.
While conducting their investigation at the hospital, deputies determined the driver was intoxicated. She was placed under arrest and has since been formally charged with intoxication manslaughter.
Speed was identified as a significant factor in the crash. The woman told deputies she had been traveling at approximately 60 mph — nearly double the 35 mph speed limit posted in that area.
Authorities confirmed the driver and the victim had been together for approximately six years and were in a common-law marriage at the time of the crash.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and no other injuries were reported. The investigation remains ongoing.
