Monmouth Park Cancels Racing Amid Dangerous Heat — Horses and Humans Both at Risk This July 4th Weekend

Monmouth Park in Oceanport, New Jersey, has officially canceled all horse racing scheduled for Friday, July 3, as a brutal heat wave threatens to push temperatures to dangerous extremes across the state.

Forecasters warn that temperatures could climb as high as 100 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday and Friday. But the real danger lies in the heat index — the “feels like” temperature when humidity is factored in — which could spike to a staggering 110 to 115 degrees in parts of New Jersey. Conditions like these pose serious health risks to both horses and the humans who care for them.

Racetrack officials made the decision to cancel Friday’s card in response to the forecast, prioritizing the safety of animals and staff over the demands of the racing schedule. Horse racing in extreme heat is particularly hazardous — horses are sensitive to heat stress and can suffer from dehydration, exhaustion, and potentially fatal conditions when exposed to high temperatures during strenuous activity.

Despite the cancellation, the weekend is far from lost for racing fans. Monmouth Park will open its gates on Saturday and Sunday, with free admission for both days in celebration of Fourth of July weekend — which this year also marks the United States’ historic 250th anniversary.

Beyond the races, the Oceanport venue offers a full day’s worth of entertainment. Visitors can place bets at the on-site sports betting parlors, enjoy a round of mini golf, or sit down for a meal at one of the track’s dining options.

As for Friday, New Jersey residents and visitors are urged to take the heat seriously. Officials across the state are expected to open cooling centers, and health experts advise limiting outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, staying hydrated, and checking on elderly neighbors and pets.

The heat wave is forecast to break heading into next week, but this holiday weekend — stay inside, stay cool.
