SPRINGFIELD, IL — Illinois is on track for one of the most destructive tornado years in recent memory — and the gap between the state and every other state in America is growing wider by the week.
196 tornado reports and counting
As of June 22, Illinois has recorded 196 tornado reports in 2026 — more than double the second-place state. That number is not a rounding error. It reflects a relentless severe weather pattern that has hammered the state throughout the first half of the year, leaving forecasters and emergency officials watching closely as the season enters its most dangerous stretch.
The rest of the top five are no slouches either
Mississippi sits second with 83 reports, followed by Missouri with 76, Indiana with 70, and Iowa with 64. Indiana’s situation stands out for a different reason — the state has already surpassed its entire 2025 annual tornado total, and months of active weather still remain. That milestone has put Indiana officials on high alert heading into July.
National count crosses 1,030 — with 40 powerful tornadoes flagged
Across the country, tornado reports for 2026 have now exceeded 1,030. Of those, 40 have been identified as possibly EF2 or stronger — the category where structural damage becomes severe and fatalities become more likely. That intensity level, spread across multiple Midwest outbreaks, underscores why this year is drawing national attention.
The worst may not be over
Forecasters warn that additional storm clusters are expected in the coming weeks, targeting many of the same states already hit hard this year. Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri are all tracking well above historical norms — and with the heart of summer still ahead, the active pattern shows no indication of letting up before fall.
Residents across the Midwest are urged to keep emergency kits ready, stay aware of local weather alerts, and have a shelter plan in place.
