Houston Faces Dangerous Heat, Afternoon Storms — and Now Saharan Dust Is Heading Straight for Southeast Texas

Southeast Texas is heading into a brutal stretch of heat, storms, and air quality concerns — and forecasters say it’s not letting up anytime soon.

Temperatures this week will climb to the low-to-mid 90s, but it’s the heat index that has forecasters concerned. Humidity will push the “feels like” temperature between 100 and 107 degrees through much of the week — hot enough to cause heat-related illness within minutes for those working or exercising outdoors.

Monday is shaping up as one of the most intense days. Highs could touch 97 degrees, with heat index values reaching as high as 107 in some spots. Relief may come briefly — scattered afternoon thunderstorms are expected Monday through Wednesday, roughly between 1 and 6 p.m. But not every neighborhood will see rain, and storms could bring heavy downpours and gusty winds before conditions cool.

Rain chances ease slightly by Thursday, though isolated showers remain possible through the weekend.

What’s coming Thursday could affect your breathing.

A plume of Saharan dust is forecast to move into Southeast Texas Thursday into Friday. The dust will cause hazier skies and a noticeable drop in air quality — a serious concern for anyone with asthma, allergies, or breathing problems. Forecasters warn the situation doesn’t end there. A second, more dense and widespread dust plume is expected to impact the Houston area early next week.

On the tropical front, the National Hurricane Center reports no development is expected in the Atlantic or Pacific over the next seven days.

Stay safe in this heat:

  • Drink water consistently — don’t wait until you’re thirsty
  • Limit outdoor activity between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Check on children, elderly neighbors, and pets
  • Never leave anyone in a parked car
  • Wear light-colored, loose clothing
