A quiet Sunday afternoon in a north Harris County neighborhood ended in tragedy when a 2-year-old boy and a 74-year-old woman were both found unresponsive in a community pond — and neither survived.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 900 block of Spring Lakes Haven Drive in the Spring Lakes neighborhood at approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday after reports of a drowning.
What happened that afternoon
A mother had brought her young son to visit an elderly relative who lived in the neighborhood. At some point during the visit, the child grew restless. The older woman offered to take him for a short walk to a nearby park.
They never returned.
When the mother stopped hearing from them and grew worried, she went looking — and found first responders already performing life-saving measures on the elderly woman. Moments later, her 2-year-old son was pulled from the water.
Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were each declared dead.
Autism may have been a factor
The mother told investigators that her son may have been autistic. Children with autism are known to be drawn to water and are at significantly higher risk of drowning — a danger that can catch caregivers off guard in seconds.
Investigators have not yet released details on exactly how the two ended up in the pond or in what order they entered the water.
Investigation ongoing
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. No foul play has been suggested at this time.
The identities of the child and the woman have not yet been publicly released.
This is a developing story. Residents in the Spring Lakes neighborhood and surrounding areas are urged to exercise caution near any body of water, particularly when young children are present.
