HARDIN COUNTY, Kentucky — For four months, a Kentucky man allegedly went about his daily life with his wife’s remains sitting beside him at home — and never told a single person she was gone.
The discovery only came after someone requested a welfare check at a home on Homestead Avenue in Hardin County, about 60 miles south of Louisville.
What Deputies Found Inside
On June 19, deputies from the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the welfare check and made contact with the homeowner, John George Emrich, 59.
When they entered the home, they found the remains of his wife inside.
Emrich told deputies that his wife had died back in February. That means her body had been in the home for roughly four months before anyone outside was notified.
Authorities have not publicly identified the woman or disclosed the cause of her death. It also remains unclear who placed the welfare check call that led deputies to the home.
Charges and What Comes Next
Emrich was arrested on the spot and booked into the Hardin County Detention Center.
He faces one count of abuse of a corpse, which is a Class D felony under Kentucky law. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
He is currently being held on a $5,000 bond. A court appearance was scheduled for Monday.
The case has left many asking how something like this goes unnoticed for so long.
