A U-Haul Driver Fell Asleep — A 2-Year-Old Didn't Make It Home

HOCKLEY, Texas — A Saturday afternoon drive turned into a tragedy no family should ever face.

A 2-year-old child is dead after a violent crash on FM 2920 near Hegar Road in the Hockley area of northwest Harris County.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, a U-Haul truck driver traveling westbound allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and drifted into oncoming traffic.

Mother Tried to Save Her Children

A mother was driving a Jeep with her two young children when she saw the box truck coming straight at her.

She had a split second to react.

Rather than take a head-on hit, she yanked the wheel and steered into a ditch — a decision that likely saved her life and the life of her infant.

But it was not enough to save her toddler.

Toddler Pronounced Dead at the Scene

Emergency responders arrived to find the 2-year-old unresponsive.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

The mother and her 8-month-old were transported to a nearby hospital. Both are expected to recover from minor injuries.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed there were no signs of intoxication involved in the crash.

No Charges Filed Yet

As of now, investigators have not announced whether the U-Haul driver will face any criminal charges.

The case remains under active investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

This tragedy is a painful reminder of how quickly a moment of inattention behind the wheel can shatter lives — and how a mother’s instinct to protect her children can be the last line between life and death.
