GARY, Indiana — A 10-year-old boy who should have been celebrating the Fourth of July holiday is dead — and a Chicago man is now behind bars, accused of pulling the trigger.
Montana Weathers was shot just before 1 a.m. Sunday during a gathering on the 200 block of Chase Street. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive. A 51-year-old man wounded in the same attack was transported to a Chicago-area hospital in critical condition.
What Led to the Shooting
Court documents paint a clear picture of how the night unraveled.
Ernesto Posadas, 31, of Chicago got into an argument with his girlfriend during the Fourth of July party. He was asked to leave — and did, but not before taking his girlfriend’s vehicle.
Later that night, after the fireworks ended and people began heading home, gunshots erupted outside the house.
Prosecutors say a Ring camera captured everything. The footage allegedly shows Posadas pulling up to the home, stepping out of the vehicle, and opening fire.
Arrest and Charges
Gary police caught up with Posadas the same night. He was taken into custody during a traffic stop on I-80/94.
He now faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and multiple firearms-related offenses.
Prosecutors have not released further details, as the case remains active. His court date has not yet been announced.
Investigators are asking anyone with additional information to come forward, saying even the smallest detail could matter in this case.
