Southeast Texas residents are being urged to take precautions as a Heat Advisory takes effect across the region Friday and Saturday, with feels-like temperatures expected to soar well past the 100-degree mark.
What to know
Actual high temperatures will climb into the 90s each day, but it’s the humidity that’s raising alarm. Feels-like temperatures are forecast to reach between 107 and 114 degrees across the Houston area this afternoon, conditions that meteorologists warn can quickly become dangerous.
Health officials note that heat stroke and heat exhaustion become real risks when temperatures feel this extreme. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during peak afternoon hours, and check on elderly neighbors or those without reliable air conditioning.
Rain chances limited but present
A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible later today, with the best chance for rain expected this afternoon as scattered storms move through. After that, dry and mostly clear skies are expected to dominate, with the next notable rain chance not arriving until Sunday. Forecasters say rain chances drop significantly heading into next week.
World Cup weekend brings added concern
The timing couldn’t be more inconvenient for soccer fans, as Houston prepares to host another World Cup match this Saturday. While a slight chance of showers exists, it remains on the lower end, and the Heat Advisory will still be active during the match. Fans planning to attend are being reminded to prepare for triple-digit feels-like temperatures and to bring water.
Tropical system update
Houston is no longer expected to see impacts from the storm system that recently moved through the Gulf, as it has since shifted east. However, the system’s remnants are now bringing heavy rain and a tornado risk to parts of the southern United States. Forecasters are also tracking a separate area of interest in the Atlantic for potential development.
