A family beach trip in Panama City Beach turned into an unexpected ordeal for one Alabama father, after a powerful Gulf wave ripped off his prosthetic leg while he was protecting his young son in the water.
Andrew Walker was vacationing with his family near Beach Access 63 when the incident happened. He had waded out deeper than usual to help his youngest son, who was wakeboarding, after the boy struggled to stay up against the current. As Walker reached out to steady him, a strong wave knocked his son down — and in the same moment, tore Walker’s prosthetic leg and its liner clean off.
For a brief second, Walker said he actually had the leg back in his grip. But with his son going under, he made an instant decision: let go of the prosthetic and grab his child instead. The moment he released it, the current swept the leg away into the Gulf, and it hasn’t been found since.
Walker, who lost his leg in a workplace accident roughly a decade ago, said the timing made the loss sting even more — he had only picked up this particular prosthetic about ten days earlier. Replacing it won’t be quick or cheap, since modern prosthetics are custom-built and can run into the thousands of dollars depending on the technology involved.
Luckily, Walker had brought along an old backup leg from years ago, which let him continue the family trip, though he admits it doesn’t fit nearly as well and is showing its age after a decade of storage.
Despite the setback, Walker says he isn’t letting it ruin the vacation and plans to enjoy the rest of his time at the beach with his family while he sorts out next steps.
His family is now asking the public for help — either in tracking down the missing prosthetic somewhere along the Panama City Beach shoreline, or in contributing toward the cost of a replacement.
