HOUSTON, Texas — A manhunt for two men accused of gunning down a 39-year-old father at a Sugar Land shopping center ended in chaos on June 13, when one suspect turned a gun on himself as officers moved to make the arrest.
Houston police say 22-year-old Axzey Mojica is now behind bars, charged with murder in Fort Bend County in the death of Sean Bree. His alleged accomplice, 23-year-old Iddris Umaru, never made it to a jail cell. Authorities say Umaru shot himself the moment officers tried to take him into custody.
The case began on June 6, when officers responded to reports of a shooting just after 1 p.m. in the parking lot of a strip center in the 10055 block of Belknap Road. They found Bree wounded. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.
Homicide detectives J. Smith and D. Toledo worked the case for days, eventually naming Umaru and Mojica as persons of interest before identifying them as suspects. Murder charges were filed against both men on June 9.
For four days, the suspects remained at large. Then, on June 13, members of the U.S. Marshals Service Gulf Coast Violent Offender Task Force and Houston PD’s Westside Patrol Crime Suppression Team tracked the pair to a business in the 105 block of West Road.
What happened next ended the search for one of them permanently. As officers moved in, Umaru pulled out a handgun and shot himself. He died at the scene.
Mojica was taken into custody without incident and remains jailed on the murder charge.
Bree’s family is now left to grieve while the surviving suspect awaits prosecution. Detectives say the investigation is still active.
