Party Fight Turns Deadly: Houston-Area Man Shot Dead, Gunman Still on the Run

Houston, Texas — A man is dead following a violent altercation that broke out during a party in west Harris County, escalating into gunfire that left one person dead and sent another suspect fleeing into the night, according to authorities.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called out around midnight Sunday to a report of a fight with shots fired in the 24800 block of Dutton Point. When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victim, identified as 42-year-old Darius Phillips, was pronounced dead at the location.

Investigators with HCSO said the shooting unfolded after a large-scale fight erupted among several individuals who were attending a party at the residence. Phillips and the alleged shooter were reportedly both involved in the physical altercation before the situation turned deadly.

According to detectives, the confrontation took a dangerous turn when the suspect, described only as a man believed to be in his 40s, produced a firearm in the middle of the chaos. The suspect allegedly opened fire on Phillips first, striking him with gunshots, before turning the weapon toward other guests who were present at the party.

Authorities have not confirmed whether anyone else was struck during the additional gunfire, though deputies noted the shooter fired in the direction of multiple bystanders before fleeing the scene.

By the time deputies arrived to secure the area, the gunman had already escaped, leaving investigators to piece together the events leading up to the shooting using witness accounts and evidence collected at the scene.

As of now, the suspect remains unidentified and at large, and the motive behind the initial fight has not been disclosed by authorities.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case and is urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted directly to HCSO or anonymously through local Crime Stoppers channels to assist in identifying the shooter.
