Illinois Has Recorded 156 Tornadoes So Far in 2026 — And the Season Is Far From Over

Illinois is on pace for one of the most dangerous severe weather years in recent memory.

Through mid-June 2026, the state has logged 156 preliminary tornado reports — more than any other state in the country, and nearly double the total recorded by the second-ranked state.

That number has stunned meteorologists and emergency officials alike.

Mississippi ranks second nationally with 82 reports. Missouri follows with 62, Iowa with 61, and Kansas with 52. Illinois has outpaced every traditional Tornado Alley state — states that have spent decades being synonymous with tornado danger.

What is happening in Illinois this year is extraordinary.

Repeated storm systems have been tracking through the Mississippi and Ohio valleys since early spring, hammering central, northern, and southern Illinois with damaging winds, large hail, and relentless tornado warnings. Multiple severe weather events have also struck neighboring Midwest states throughout the season.

Residents across the state — from small rural towns to suburban communities — have faced round after round of severe weather with little time to recover between events.

It is important to note that the 156 figure reflects preliminary tornado reports, not finalized confirmed tornadoes. National Weather Service surveys can later confirm, combine, or remove individual reports following on-the-ground investigations. The final numbers, when released, could shift — but the overall picture of an unusually violent season will not.

And the season is not over.

Peak severe weather activity typically extends well into summer across Illinois and the broader Midwest. Emergency management officials are urging all residents to act now — before the next system arrives.

Residents should ensure they have multiple ways to receive tornado warnings, including a weather radio, phone alerts, and local broadcast notifications. Shelter plans should be reviewed and ready. Waiting until a warning is issued is too late.

156 reports. And summer has barely begun.
