Houston Metro Train Derails After Collision With Fire Truck — Passenger Hospitalized, Investigators On Scene

Houston, TX- A Houston Metro light rail train derailed Friday evening after colliding with a Houston Fire Department truck near the Near Northside neighborhood, leaving one passenger hospitalized and raising urgent questions about rail safety in the city.

The collision occurred around 6:45 p.m. on Hogan Street near North Main Street, along the Red Line corridor between the Quitman/Near Northside and Burnett Transit Center stations. According to Metro police, preliminary information indicates the fire truck — which was actively responding to an emergency call — struck the train, causing it to derail from its tracks.

One passenger sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed the injuries are non-life-threatening.

The incident unfolded just one day before Houston prepared to host a World Cup soccer match, drawing tens of thousands of visitors expected to rely heavily on the Metro rail network. Despite the crash, Metro officials quickly moved to reassure the public — stating they anticipated no disruption to rail service for Saturday’s game at Reliant Stadium, located near the southern end of the Red Line, far from the accident scene.

As of Saturday morning, Metro’s official website showed no service alerts for the Red Line, suggesting the affected section had been cleared or rerouted overnight.

The crash raises troubling questions about coordination between emergency vehicles and the light rail system, particularly at intersections where trains and trucks frequently cross paths. It remains unclear whether proper crossing signals were active at the time of the collision.

An investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing. Metro police have not yet released further details on what led to the impact or whether any personnel from the fire department were injured.

Residents and commuters with information related to the incident are encouraged to contact Metro Transit Police or the Houston Fire Department’s public affairs office.
