CHAMPAIGN, Illinois — A 19-year-old man is fighting for his life after being shot while riding in a car in the early morning hours Sunday in Champaign.
Officers were alerted at approximately 1:47 a.m. after the victim arrived at a local hospital by personal transport. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and was immediately taken into surgery.
As of the department’s latest update, he remains in critical condition.
Shot While Riding as a Passenger
Preliminary findings indicate the young man was a passenger in a vehicle traveling through the 1600 block of North Mattis Avenue when an unknown individual or individuals opened fire on the car.
How many shots were fired and where the shooter was positioned have not yet been confirmed by investigators.
No Suspect, No Arrests
Police have not released a description of any suspect. No arrests have been announced.
Detectives are actively collecting evidence and working to piece together exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting.
The victim’s identity has not been released. Authorities have also not confirmed whether the shooting was targeted or random.
