The plan to shut down the Department of Education was laid out in Trump’s Project 2025. The 900-page blueprint for Trump’s second presidency is going to cut federal funding for schools, that allegedly discriminate against LGBTQ+ students, and that is just the beginning.
The Department of Education’s dismantlement will affect so many families, students, and teachers. Lower-income students and students with disabilities will lose the most. This is nerve-wracking for the communities that are going to be affected.
Closing down the department means the loss of funding that goes towards feeding, educating, and protecting students. This will affect every student, leaving many anxious and worried.
The removal of the department will cause higher education to be more expensive and could be out of reach for lower and middle-class families. There has not been a plan laid out for what is to happen when this has taken place.
The removal of the Department of Education is said to take place on March 21, 2025. They are allegedly going to start laying off staff as a start to dismantle the Department of Education. Around 1,300 workers have already been laid off so far, in March.
“I feel that it is unfair to take away the special education programs because special needs students are already vulnerable. I also don’t get why they feel the need to close down the Department of Education…How does it benefit them in any way..?”, Expressed Freshman, Emilia Young.
A math teacher at Sultana High School, Robert Sellers said, “I think that it’s really confusing, I’m really interested in learning more about why they’re doing it. I do think it’s useless, why would you wanna take away something that many kids depend on.”
The reason for the removal of the department has not been said yet but people have been speculating, some say it’s because of budget cuts. It is best to not believe anybody’s words until Donald Trump states his reasonings on how this is going to take place.
