Two cars slam into a building in Boyle Heights — one person fighting for their life, driver arrested for DUI

BOYLE HEIGHTS, California — A violent crash sent three people to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after two cars plowed into a building in one of Los Angeles’s most densely populated neighborhoods.

The collision happened just before 3:20 p.m. near the intersection of Cesar Chavez Avenue and Lorena Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Two vehicles were involved. Both ended up hitting the building.

Three Victims, Three Different Outcomes

All three people injured were transported to area hospitals — but the severity of their conditions varied widely.

One woman suffered a broken leg. A man was treated for a head injury. A third victim was rushed to the hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries, leaving their condition uncertain in the hours that followed.

Police did not release the names or ages of the victims.

DUI Arrest Made at the Scene

Investigators say one of the drivers behind the wheel that afternoon was under the influence.

That driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI following the crash. Officers were also requested to respond to the hospital as part of the investigation — a step typically taken when victims may be witnesses or when additional evidence needs to be collected at the medical facility.

It remains unclear what caused the two vehicles to veer into the building or whether speed was a factor.

A Neighborhood Left Shaken

Boyle Heights is a busy, walkable community where foot traffic along Cesar Chavez Avenue is common throughout the day. A crash of this kind, at that hour, in that location, could easily have involved pedestrians.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the investigation is ongoing or whether additional charges are expected.
