Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Hit N.J. — Thousands Still Without Power as More Storms Move In

TRENTON, New Jersey — A dangerous stretch of weather is gripping New Jersey, and forecasters are warning it is far from over.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued Sunday evening across Somerset, Hunterdon, and Morris counties, with the warning set to expire at 9:15 p.m. Seven southern New Jersey counties are also under a severe thunderstorm watch.

Flooding Threat Covers the Entire State

A flood watch has been issued for all of New Jersey as storms push rainfall rates as high as 2 inches per hour into the region.

That kind of rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems quickly — turning roads into rivers within minutes.

Residents in low-lying areas and near waterways are urged to stay alert and avoid driving through flooded roads.

60,000 Still in the Dark

The timing could not be worse for tens of thousands of New Jersey residents.

Nearly 60,000 homes and businesses are still without power from storms that hit earlier. Repair crews have been working to restore electricity — but the new wave of severe weather is expected to slow that progress significantly.

More Storms Coming Monday

Sunday’s storms are just the beginning of a multi-day weather threat.

The National Weather Service warned that showers and storms are likely to linger into Monday — and could become widespread and heavy again by afternoon.

“Impacts from flash flooding could be significant over the next couple of days,” forecasters said.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 70s and low 80s by Monday — offering some relief for residents still stuck without air conditioning during the outages.

Officials are urging New Jersey residents to stay weather-aware, keep phones charged, and have a plan ready if conditions worsen overnight.
