New Jersey residents are being warned to prepare for one of the most hazardous holiday weekends in recent memory, as an extreme heat warning combines with a growing threat of violent thunderstorms to create potentially life-threatening conditions across the state.
The extreme heat warning takes effect at noon Wednesday for most of New Jersey, with temperatures expected to surge into the mid- to upper-90s. But this is only the beginning.
Thursday will push conditions even further, with temperatures climbing to the upper 90s and approaching 100 degrees across much of the state. Officials are urging residents to take the heat seriously — this is not a typical summer warm spell.
Friday will be the most dangerous day. Temperatures are forecast to reach between 100 and 105 degrees, and heat index values — what the air actually feels like on human skin — could hit between 100 and 110 degrees. The National Weather Service has warned that overnight temperatures will only fall into the mid-70s to low 80s, offering little to no recovery time for the body.
All-time high temperature records are at risk. Newark Airport currently holds the state record at 108 degrees. Atlantic City and Trenton airports sit at 106 degrees. Forecasters say those historic numbers could be challenged Thursday and Friday.
Making conditions worse — severe thunderstorms could erupt at any time during the weekend. Starting Friday and continuing through Sunday and Monday, widespread afternoon and evening storms are expected. Some of these storms could produce damaging wind gusts and dangerous lightning.
At the Jersey Shore, beachgoers face an additional threat. A high risk of rip currents has been issued for Atlantic and Cape May county beaches, with a moderate risk in Monmouth and Ocean counties.
Saturday may offer a brief drop — highs in the mid-90s to near 100 degrees — but thunderstorm chances of 30% to 60% remain through the weekend.
Forecasters have noted they may need to extend heat alerts beyond Saturday if conditions persist.
Stay hydrated, avoid prolonged time outdoors during peak heat hours, and check on elderly neighbors and family members. This weekend demands caution.
