A dangerous heat wave is bearing down on New Jersey, and forecasters are warning residents to take it seriously. Temperatures across the Garden State are expected to soar between 100 and 105 degrees Thursday and Friday — and when humidity is factored in, it could feel like 105 to 110 degrees.
That’s not just uncomfortable. That’s deadly.
What’s Coming and When
The heat builds Wednesday, with highs climbing into the mid-to-upper 90s and heat indexes already hitting 100 to 105 degrees. But Thursday and Friday will be the most dangerous days of the week.
Overnight temperatures are expected to stay in the upper 70s to low 80s — meaning there will be almost no relief, even after dark.
Before the heat peaks, spotty thunderstorms are possible Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon across northern New Jersey, with a risk of damaging winds and small hail.
Warnings Already Issued
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning covering all of northern and central New Jersey, running from noon Wednesday through 8 p.m. Saturday. Southern New Jersey is under an Extreme Heat Watch from Thursday afternoon through Saturday evening.
That covers the majority of all 21 counties in the state.
Historic Records Could Fall
This heat wave isn’t just severe — it could rewrite history. Newark’s all-time record high sits at 108 degrees, set in 2011. Atlantic City and Trenton both hold records of 106 degrees. Forecasters say those records could be challenged Thursday and Friday.
Who Is Most at Risk
People without air-conditioning, outdoor workers, the elderly, and young children face the highest danger. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can set in quickly when temperatures and humidity combine at these levels.
What You Should Do
Stay indoors during peak hours (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.), drink water constantly, and check on elderly neighbors. Local cooling centers will be open across the state — contact your county office for locations.
Do not wait until you feel sick. In heat this extreme, symptoms can come on fast.
