A Harris County man is behind bars after authorities say he stole a private ambulance with a medic still inside, setting off a tense chase that officials say could have turned deadly.
The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. Monday in northwest Harris County, near Bold River Road and Doves Landing Avenue. According to officials, the suspect allegedly took control of the private ambulance while a medic remained inside the vehicle — leaving the medical worker with no immediate way out.
When deputies arrived on scene, the suspect attempted to flee on foot. Law enforcement quickly pursued him and took him into custody within minutes of arriving, officials confirmed.
The medic was not physically harmed during the ordeal.
Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman addressed the incident directly, stating the situation could have ended far worse. He credited his deputies for their swift response in neutralizing the threat before it escalated further.
“This could have ended much differently,” Herman said, praising the deputies for their quick action.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the suspect or confirmed what charges he is facing. It also remains unclear what motivated the theft or whether the suspect was familiar with the medic or the ambulance service.
The incident raises ongoing concerns about the safety of private emergency medical workers, who often operate in the field with minimal security measures in place. Unlike hospital staff, ambulance crews frequently work in unpredictable environments and can be vulnerable to situations exactly like this one.
No additional details about the suspect’s identity or criminal history have been released at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
