Atascocita, Texas — What began as an ordinary afternoon in the Merrylands neighborhood quickly turned into an unexpected wildlife encounter when an alligator was spotted making its way through a residential street, prompting a response from local law enforcement.
Deputies with Constable Mark Herman’s Office were dispatched to the 17000 block of Cuthbert Street in the Atascocita area after residents reported the unusual visitor casually moving through their neighborhood. The sight of a live alligator navigating a residential street understandably drew the immediate attention of nearby homeowners and passersby.
Upon arrival, Constable Deputies did not attempt to forcibly remove or harm the animal. Instead, officers maintained a careful watch over the gator, positioning themselves to monitor its movements and ensure that no residents came dangerously close to the wild reptile. Their primary focus remained on public safety while allowing the animal space to move on its own terms.
After a period of careful monitoring and gentle encouragement from deputies, the alligator eventually changed course and made its way back toward a wooded area near the bayou — the natural habitat far better suited to the creature than a suburban street.
No injuries to residents or the animal were reported during the incident. The response was handled calmly and professionally, with deputies keeping a safe perimeter until the situation resolved itself naturally.
Constable Mark Herman later addressed the incident with a lighthearted tone, noting that working in Precinct 4 means officers must always be prepared for the unexpected — whether that involves a routine call or escorting an alligator back to the wild.
The incident serves as an important reminder for residents in areas near bayous, wetlands and wooded zones across the greater Houston region. Alligators are native to Southeast Texas and occasionally wander into residential areas, particularly during warmer months when they are most active.
Residents are urged to never approach or attempt to feed alligators and to contact local authorities immediately if one is spotted near homes or populated areas.
