HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A early Tuesday morning crash on the North Freeway has claimed the life of a pickup truck driver after his vehicle slammed into a disabled tractor-trailer sitting in the High Occupancy Vehicle lane, authorities confirmed.
The fatal collision took place at approximately 4:59 a.m. on June 23 in the 19000 block of the North Freeway, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said Rubi Hernandez was operating a black 2017 Freightliner tractor hauling a 2016 Great Dane trailer northbound when the vehicle suffered mechanical failure involving its air brake system. The disabled truck came to a stop in the northbound HOV lane. Hernandez activated the emergency flashers and placed two warning triangles behind the vehicle, following standard safety protocols required in such situations.
Despite those precautions, tragedy could not be avoided.
Hector Bazan, driving a gray 2024 Ford Ranger, was traveling northbound in the same HOV lane when he approached the stationary tractor-trailer. Preliminary findings from investigators indicate Bazan failed to reduce his speed in time and struck the rear of the Great Dane trailer with significant force.
Bazan sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders arriving to the crash site reported he showed no signs of life upon their arrival.
Hernandez remained at the scene following the crash and cooperated fully with responding authorities. Investigators reported he showed no signs of intoxication. No charges have been announced at this time.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division has taken over the investigation and continues to examine all circumstances surrounding the deadly crash.
Authorities have not yet released additional information regarding the ongoing investigation.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by highway breakdowns in high-speed travel lanes, particularly during early morning hours when visibility and driver alertness remain critical factors on major roadways.
