ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — A graduation party that was supposed to be a celebration ended with a teenager dead on the backyard lawn — and the mom who hosted it will not spend a single day behind bars.
Crystal Aguilar, 41, pleaded no contest to giving alcohol to minors. She was sentenced on June 22 to 18 months of probation.
The party took place at her Albuquerque home on May 31, 2025. Aguilar told her teenage sons they could invite 10 to 15 friends. But after the event was promoted on social media, the crowd swelled far beyond what she had planned.
Shots With Teenagers — And It Was All on Video
Police say Aguilar set out alcoholic beverages that were consumed by multiple underage guests that night.
She was not just watching from the sidelines.
A woman who attended the party told officers she personally witnessed Aguilar doing shots and telling guests “they were okay to drink whatever was on the table.”
She backed it up with cellphone video — footage that showed Aguilar and the 19-year-old drinking together at the party.
A Teen Found Dead on the Lawn
The 19-year-old had brought a stolen gun with him to the party. A woman who arrived with him said she had warned him not to bring it, telling him the host had made clear no guns were allowed.
Later that night, officers responded to a gunshot call at the home. They found the teen had turned the weapon on himself. He died on the lawn in Aguilar’s backyard.
When police spoke with Aguilar and her husband shortly after, both were believed to be intoxicated.
The Sentence That’s Sparking Outrage
Aguilar’s attorney argued that New Mexico law permits parents to serve alcohol to their own children at home — though the guests that night were far from just family members.
The court accepted her no contest plea.
The sentence: 18 months of probation. No prison time. No conviction on her record.
A teenager is dead. A mother walked out of court free.
