A 14-year-old jumped off a diving rock at a Georgia park — he never came back up

ROME, Georgia — A fun summer evening at a local park turned into a tragedy Monday night when a 14-year-old boy drowned after jumping into a creek with his friends.

Tyler Brown was swimming and diving with friends at Armuchee Park on Jones Mill Road in Floyd County. The group had gathered near Armuchee Creek, at a spot known locally as a popular diving rock.

At around 8:45 p.m., Brown jumped into the creek from the rock.

He never came back up.

Friends Called 911 After He Did Not Resurface

After several minutes passed with no sign of Brown, his friends called 911.

Crews from the Rome-Floyd Fire Department and Floyd County Police Department arrived quickly and launched an immediate search of the creek.

Within 30 minutes, at 9:15 p.m., firefighters recovered Brown’s body from the water.

Death Ruled an Accident

The Floyd County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Brown’s death has been ruled an accident.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is involved in the investigation.

Officials have extended their deepest condolences to Brown’s family and everyone affected by the loss.
