Flood Warning Issued for Houston Area as Storms Hammer Harris County — But a Dangerous Heat Threat Follows

Houston residents woke Sunday to a dangerous combination of flooding and suffocating heat — and officials are warning that even after the storms clear, the danger is far from over.

A flood warning remains in effect for parts of Harris, Liberty and Chambers counties until 12:45 p.m. Sunday, as early morning thunderstorms continue to pound the region. Forecasters say an additional 1 to 3 inches of rainfall is expected before conditions improve, raising serious concerns about minor flooding in low-lying neighborhoods.

The rain is expected to taper off by early afternoon — but what follows is no relief. Temperatures will climb into the 90s, and with dew points dangerously high, heat index values will push well into the triple digits. Residents are urged not to leave pets outside on scorching sidewalks, and authorities are repeating a critical warning: never leave a child or animal inside a parked car. At 90°F outside, the interior of a vehicle can reach deadly temperatures within minutes.

Portugal returns to Houston on Tuesday to face Uzbekistan, and weather will not be a concern for fans. Temperatures will sit near the low 90s with a rain chance below 10%. Attendees at the FIFA Fan Fest are advised to stay hydrated and leave umbrellas at home.

On the tropical front, Tropical Storm Arthur has moved east and no longer threatens Houston. However, Arthur’s remnants are now unleashing heavy downpours and possible tornadoes across parts of the southeastern United States. Forecasters are also watching a low-probability area of interest in the Atlantic as the storm pushes offshore.
