Northern Maine Bracing for Dangerous Flooding as Major Storm System Closes In This Week

Caribou, Maine – Northern Maine residents may be running out of time to prepare.

A significant storm system is expected to push into the region late this week, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and a rising threat of localized flooding — and forecasters say the ground simply cannot absorb much more water.

The National Weather Service in Caribou has confirmed that soils across the area remain heavily saturated from recent rainfall. That means any additional downpour, even a moderate one, could quickly overwhelm drainage systems and send water rushing into roadways, low-lying areas, and neighborhoods.

When to Expect the Worst

Rain chances are climbing fast for Thursday night into Friday, with precipitation probabilities reaching 70% to 85% across Aroostook County, Piscataquis County, and Downeast Maine. Communities including Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton, Millinocket, and Bangor are all in the potential impact zone.

Isolated thunderstorms also cannot be ruled out as a cold front pushes through the area. The combination of heavy rain, thunder, and already-soaked ground raises the risk of downed trees and scattered power outages — particularly in areas hit hardest by the storm.

What Residents Should Do Now

Drivers are urged to stay alert for water-covered roads, reduced visibility, and standing water during heavy downpours. Conditions can change rapidly, and flooded roads can be far more dangerous than they appear.

Campers, hikers, and anyone with outdoor plans this weekend should closely monitor updated forecasts before heading out. What looks manageable today could become hazardous by Friday.

Forecasters warn that additional flood advisories or watches may be issued as the system draws closer. Officials say confidence is increasing that this will be a significant rain event for northern Maine before the weekend arrives.

Residents are encouraged to have emergency supplies ready, charge devices in advance, and stay informed as the storm approaches.
