PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — If you are heading out Tuesday, you need to know what is coming — because this is not an ordinary rainy day.
The Philadelphia region is under a Weather Alert as several rounds of severe thunderstorms are expected from the morning commute all the way through Tuesday evening.
What to Expect and When
The first round hits during the morning rush.
A warm front pushing north will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms starting early. Rainfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour in some spots, making flash flooding a real danger for drivers.
New Jersey and northeastern Pennsylvania are most vulnerable in the morning — especially communities that already dealt with flooding over the weekend.
As the day moves into the afternoon and evening, conditions get more dangerous.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire region under an enhanced risk for severe weather — level 3 out of 5. Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat. An isolated tornado also cannot be ruled out.
The flood risk does not end when the strongest storms move through. Additional rounds of thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday night along an approaching cold front, keeping the threat going into the overnight hours.
