APPLE VALLEY, Minnesota — A man who said he was only trying to find his missing sister ended up shooting an 18-year-old in the face — and is now headed to prison for it.
Ibrahim Ali Mohamed, 21, pleaded guilty this week to one count of first-degree assault. Under his plea deal, he faces between seven years and 10 years, nine months behind bars.
How a Sister Search Turned Into a Shooting
It started on May 10, 2025, at Kelley Park in Apple Valley, a suburb about 20 miles south of Minneapolis.
Mohamed could see his sister’s location on his phone and went to the park with a group of friends to find her. But when he arrived, things quickly went sideways.
He got into an argument with a separate group. His sister spotted him and one of her friends tried to stop him from drawing his gun — but couldn’t. Mohamed then began pistol-whipping people and chasing others out of the park while brandishing the weapon.
‘I’m Going to Kill Your Friend’
The situation escalated when the victim received a threatening message: “If you don’t come back, I’m going to kill your friend.”
The 18-year-old went back.
As he drove onto the park grounds, Mohamed fired. The victim was struck in the face and suffered life-threatening injuries. He required surgery on his face, neck, and chest. In total, 10 shots were fired.
Mohamed later claimed the car was speeding toward him and that someone inside had fired first. Investigators found no evidence to support that claim.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on October 7.
