LONDON, Kentucky — A 37-year-old woman is facing serious criminal charges after she allegedly left a 91-year-old man stranded inside a disabled vehicle on a day when the heat index hit 101 degrees — and all because he would not buy her cigarettes.
Nikki Reed Hoskins was arrested last week and charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, theft by unlawful taking, third-degree assault on a police officer, and menacing.
What Happened on That Roadway
According to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call about an elderly man left stranded in his car on the road.
When they arrived, they found the 91-year-old still inside the disabled vehicle. He told deputies that Hoskins had pulled the keys from the ignition after the two argued over whether he would buy her cigarettes.
She then walked back toward her nearby home — leaving him trapped in the car, unable to move it, in extreme heat.
The victim could not call for help himself. A passing stranger made the 911 call.
She Was Found Hiding in Her Bedroom
Deputies went to Hoskins’ residence on Littontown Road and confirmed she was inside. She refused repeated commands to come outside.
After learning she had outstanding warrants, deputies entered the home and found her hiding in the bedroom.
Authorities allege she struck Deputy Cyruss McVey as officers attempted to take her into custody. Deputies also noted she appeared unsteady on her feet, had slurred speech, and showed signs of being under the influence at the time of her arrest.
Prior Warrants and a Court Date
Hoskins was also served with two outstanding bench warrants — one tied to child support and another involving prior charges of public intoxication and contempt of court.
She was booked into the Laurel County Correctional Center on a $10,000 cash-only bond and was scheduled to appear in court on July 6.
The elderly victim was not reported to have suffered serious injury, thanks in part to the stranger who stopped and made that call.
