A joyful Fourth of July gathering in Channelview turned into a nightmare for one Harris County family after a 9-year-old child was shot while standing in their own backyard — and the person responsible is still out there.
What Happened
The incident occurred overnight at a home in the 1500 block of Park Drive in the Channelview area. The child was outside in the backyard during a family gathering when a bullet struck them in the arm.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigators believe the shot came from celebratory gunfire fired somewhere in the surrounding area. The child was not the intended target — they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, in their own home.
Child’s Condition
The 9-year-old was rushed to a nearby hospital following the shooting. As of the latest update, the child is reported to be in fair condition. While the injury appears to have been non-life-threatening, the physical and emotional trauma for this family cannot be overstated.
Shooter Still Not Identified
Despite the investigation being underway, authorities have not yet identified the person who fired the shot. Celebratory gunfire — bullets fired into the air during holidays — is a dangerous and illegal act that puts innocent lives at risk. What goes up must come down, and in this case, a child paid the price.
