Teen suspect in Penn State student's murder caught hiding in Colorado — his stepfather is also charged

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — A 16-year-old wanted in the murder of a Penn State student has been arrested in Colorado — but police say the case is far from over.

Azzubair Outen-Fleming was taken into custody Wednesday night by U.S. Marshals at a home in Colorado Springs, where he had been hiding with distant family members.

He will face charges of murder, criminal conspiracy, robbery and illegal possession of a firearm in connection with the fatal shooting of Billy Schmidt.

Schmidt, a Penn State student, was shot and killed near his South Philadelphia home on June 6.

Suspect Tried to Hide His Identity

Outen-Fleming fled Pennsylvania around June 11, just days after the shooting.

Investigators traced him to Colorado Springs and set up surveillance at a residence on the 4200 block of Loomis Avenue on July 1.

He was arrested inside the home around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. He attempted to conceal his identity, but U.S. Marshals said he was identified through investigative means.

He is currently being held at the Zebulon Pike Youth Services Center in Colorado Springs while awaiting extradition to Philadelphia.

Stepfather Also Charged

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced Wednesday that Donte Abdulmalik, 35 — Outen-Fleming’s stepfather — was charged with hindering apprehension, obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence.

Abdulmalik was also wanted for a parole or probation violation.

Second Suspect Still on the Run

A second teen, Kaiseem Smith, 16, remains wanted in connection with Schmidt’s murder.

U.S. Marshals are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

“Crossing state lines did not prevent this arrest,” said Robert Clark, supervisory deputy Marshal for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. “We will continue our pursuit of Kaiseem Smith until he is in custody.”
