HOUSTON, Texas — A pre-dawn police chase through Southwest Houston ended in a deadly crash Wednesday, leaving one person dead and snarling traffic for thousands of morning commuters.
It started around 4 a.m. when Houston Police Department officers spotted a stolen vehicle in the Mission Bend area and gave chase.
The pursuit ended violently on Highway 6 near the Westpark Tollway.
One Dead, Two in Custody
When the crash came to a stop, one person inside the stolen vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other suspects were detained by officers.
As of Wednesday morning, authorities had not yet identified the person who died or confirmed the exact cause of death. Investigators were also still piecing together the full sequence of events leading up to the crash.
HPD command staff were expected to brief reporters later in the morning with more details.
Police Cruiser Badly Damaged
An HPD patrol vehicle took a serious hit during the incident.
Witnesses at the scene described the cruiser’s hood and front bumper as visibly crushed, indicating the patrol car was directly involved in the collision — not simply nearby when the wreck happened.
Major Traffic Disruption
By 8:20 a.m., all southbound lanes of Highway 6 between Alief Clodine Road and Bellaire Boulevard were shut down as investigators worked the scene.
For anyone familiar with that stretch of road, a full southbound closure during morning rush hour means significant delays spreading across a wide part of West Houston.
Multiple HPD units and Harris County Sheriff’s deputies were on the ground covering an area stretching from the Highway 6 overpass down to the feeder road.
The investigation is ongoing.
Questions Still Without Answers
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the person who died was inside the stolen vehicle at the time of the crash or how exactly the fatality occurred.
That level of uncertainty this early in an investigation is not unusual. A chaotic 4 a.m. crash scene with multiple suspects, a wrecked police cruiser, and active lane closures takes time to fully document.
HPD was expected to release more information later Wednesday as investigators continued their work.
