Southeast Texas is bracing for a punishing stretch of heat that officials say could push feels-like temperatures to dangerous levels just in time for the Fourth of July holiday, raising serious concerns for anyone planning to spend time outdoors.
On Wednesday, heat index values are expected to climb between 102 and 107 degrees across the Houston area — and that is only the beginning. By Friday and through the holiday weekend, conditions are forecast to worsen, with feels-like readings potentially reaching 105 to 110 degrees in some locations.
Meteorologists warn that some areas could approach or exceed Heat Advisory thresholds by the weekend. Even without an official advisory in place, experts say this level of heat can quickly overwhelm the body, especially during extended outdoor exposure.
Thursday brings a brief but important break in the heat pattern, with a 40 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms offering some temporary relief. Rain coverage will be heaviest east and south of Houston, including parts of Chambers and Liberty counties along the coast. Friday and Saturday turn quieter again before storm chances inch back up heading into next week.
Heat safety: what you need to do now
- Drink water frequently, even when you do not feel thirsty
- Take breaks in shade or air conditioning during the hottest hours
- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing outdoors
- Check on elderly neighbors and anyone without reliable air conditioning
- Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle
Beachgoers should also exercise caution. A high rip current risk remains in effect for Gulf-facing beaches through Wednesday morning. Even experienced swimmers can be pulled away from shore under these conditions. Anyone heading to the coast should check conditions in advance and stay near a lifeguard when possible.
Air quality in the region is at a moderate level following the departure of a thick Saharan dust plume that moved through earlier this week. However, another wave of Saharan dust is possible around the middle of next week.
