HOUSTON — A woman is dead following a violent overnight crash that sent her vehicle careening across a median and into oncoming traffic in northeast Houston, officials confirmed Sunday.
The crash occurred just after 1:20 a.m. in the 14700 block of Old Humble Road. According to investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, a southbound sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed moments before the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle.
Witnesses at the scene told deputies the sedan veered sharply out of its lane, crossing the median and entering the northbound lanes of traffic. The car then collided head-on with a truck traveling in the opposite direction.
The force of the impact caused the sedan to spin before coming to a stop in the middle of the roadway, authorities said. The driver of the sedan, believed to be an adult woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. As of Sunday morning, her identity had not been officially confirmed, and authorities have not yet notified next of kin.
The driver and passengers inside the truck escaped the crash without injury, deputies said, though the vehicle sustained significant damage in the collision.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, shutting down portions of Old Humble Road as investigators worked to document the wreckage and gather evidence. The roadway was closed for several hours overnight as crash reconstruction specialists examined skid marks, vehicle debris, and witness accounts to determine exactly what led to the sedan crossing into oncoming lanes.
Investigators have not yet released information on what may have caused the driver to lose control, though speed is believed to be a contributing factor. It remains unclear whether weather, road conditions, or driver impairment played any role in the crash.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing, and additional details — including the victim’s identity — are expected to be released once her family has been notified.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information to come forward as the investigation continues.
