A Washington, D.C. man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly broke into his girlfriend’s apartment, beat her, and grabbed their infant daughter by the neck until she lost consciousness, according to police.
Victor Battle Jr., 21, was arrested and charged with strangulation, child cruelty, and aggravated assault, among other counts, police said. The incident reportedly took place around 5 p.m. Thursday in the 1300 block of Shepherd Street, Northwest.
According to the criminal complaint, the victim heard a knock at her door and noticed someone had covered the peephole. When she opened the door, Battle, her boyfriend, allegedly forced his way inside by kicking it open.
She grabbed her baby and fled into a bedroom, locking the door behind her, police said. Battle then allegedly broke through that door as well and began punching the woman in the face and ribs.
Police say Battle then lifted the infant by the neck and held his grip until she lost consciousness, creating what officers described as a risk of serious bodily harm.
A neighbor who tried to step in was also allegedly attacked before Battle fled the apartment. As he left, he reportedly warned he would return armed.
Officers were called to the scene after the victim dialed 911. The baby was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Battle was later located and taken to a hospital himself for a hand injury he sustained while breaking down the door, according to the affidavit. While there, he allegedly grew agitated, damaged hospital property, and kicked an officer.
He was subsequently taken into custody. A court date has not yet been scheduled.
Police continue to investigate the case.
