Over 100 Animals Could Be Gone From Houston Shelters This Weekend — Here's What's Happening Saturday

HOUSTON — More than 100 dogs and cats currently held in Houston-area shelters and rescue groups are set to be placed into new homes this Saturday — if enough residents show up in time.

Best Friends Animal Society is hosting a large-scale adoption event on June 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Garage HTX, located at 1201 Oliver St., Suite 106, in Houston. Every adoption fee has been completely waived for the event.

Each pet adopted will leave with a match-day adoption pack — a starter kit that includes pet food and a toy. The organization has partnered with eight local shelter and rescue groups across the greater Houston area to bring the animals together for a single day.

Among the participating organizations are SPCA of Brazoria County, Sugar Land Animal Services, and Galveston Island Humane Society, along with several other groups. Houston-area shelters are currently caring for thousands of homeless animals, and officials say the numbers remain a serious ongoing concern.

For those not yet ready to adopt, the event also offers opportunities to sign up as a volunteer or temporary foster family. Both roles are described as urgently needed to help reduce the number of animals waiting for permanent placement.

Best Friends Animal Society has operated since 1984 and is widely credited with helping launch the nationwide no-kill shelter movement in the United States. The Saturday event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — those interested are advised to arrive early.
