Dangerous Heat and Deadly Beach Conditions Grip Southeast Texas — What You Need to Know Before Stepping Outside This Week

Southeast Texas is locked in an intense summer heat pattern this week, with no relief in sight for the foreseeable future. Afternoon highs will sit in the low to mid 90s, but it is the heat index that residents need to pay close attention to — officials warn that the feels-like temperature will reach between 103 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit during peak afternoon hours.

The driving force behind this dangerous stretch is a strong ridge of high pressure parked over East Texas and the northern Gulf. That system is actively pushing storm activity away from the region, keeping skies mostly sunny and conditions hot and dry through the workweek. Rain chances remain very low, offering little hope of any cooling showers.

Nighttime temperatures will offer almost no break. Morning lows are expected to hold in the upper 70s to low 80s — still warm and muggy enough to prevent the body from fully recovering from daytime heat exposure.

High rip current risk is in effect at all Gulf-facing beaches through Tuesday. Even strong, experienced swimmers can be pulled away from shore. Swim only near a lifeguard, stay away from jetties and piers, and avoid the water entirely if conditions look rough.

Health officials urge everyone to take this heat seriously. Drink water regularly, wear light-colored and loose clothing, and limit outdoor activity during the hottest afternoon hours. Check on elderly neighbors, young children, and pets — and never leave anyone in a parked vehicle under any circumstances.

On a positive note, the tropics remain quiet. No tropical development is expected over the next seven days, so there are no immediate concerns from the Gulf, Caribbean, or Atlantic at this time.
