CYPRESS, Texas — A shopping trip to a busy Texas warehouse store turned into a criminal matter Sunday after a 4-year-old girl was discovered alone and overheating inside a locked, turned-off vehicle in the parking lot while her mother browsed inside.
Vannie Nguyen, 33, of Cypress, now faces a felony charge of abandoning a child with intent to return, according to Harris County court records. The arrest has reignited urgent warnings from law enforcement about the deadly dangers of leaving young children unattended in vehicles, particularly during the brutal summer heat.
Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office deputies responded to the Costco location on the Northwest Freeway in Cypress after concerned shoppers flagged down help upon discovering the little girl alone inside the vehicle. The car was completely turned off, with no air conditioning running.
Authorities say the child had been trapped inside the hot vehicle for approximately 30 minutes before nearby citizens took action and helped get her out. Emergency medical services responded to the scene and worked to evaluate the child and lower her body temperature.
By the time paramedics had stabilized the little girl, her mother emerged from inside the store and was promptly arrested on scene.
Constable Mark Herman issued a firm statement in the aftermath of the incident, underscoring just how rapidly conditions inside a parked car can become life-threatening.
“Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise dangerously fast, even within minutes,” Herman said. “Never leave children or pets unattended inside a vehicle. We are grateful for the quick actions of the citizens who stepped in to help this child.”
Medical experts consistently warn that vehicle interior temperatures can spike 20 degrees or more within just 10 minutes on a warm day, creating conditions that can quickly lead to heatstroke and death in young children.
The child is expected to recover. Nguyen’s case is pending in Harris County court.
