A North Carolina mother is behind bars after a domestic dispute turned deadly, ending with all three of her young sons dead following a high-speed crash in Fayetteville.
Megan Symone Scott, 31, is charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of her sons — Jae’Coda Thomas, 3, Ju’Mari Thomas, 6, and Jack Thomas, 8 — along with multiple additional charges including assault on law enforcement officers.
According to authorities, the incident began on June 3 in the 100 block of S. Eastern Boulevard as a domestic violence situation. Scott and her boyfriend got into an argument over money, during which she allegedly bit him on the arm. When he stepped out of the vehicle, Scott allegedly drove toward him — he briefly ended up on the hood of her car before falling to the ground and fleeing the scene.
Officers later located Scott and attempted a traffic stop. When they ordered her to exit the vehicle, she refused and fled — striking two officers, who sustained minor injuries. Scott then sped off in her Kia Forte with her three children unsecured in the backseat, reaching speeds of 111 mph.
As she traveled down State Road 53, Scott crossed the centerline, overcorrected, and lost control of the vehicle before slamming into a tree. Scott and two of her sons were ejected from the car on impact. Two boys were pronounced dead at the scene. The third was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Investigators confirmed none of the children were in seat belts or car seats.
Scott is currently being held in Cumberland County Jail without bond. Her next scheduled court appearance is July 7.
The children’s family has launched a fundraiser to cover funeral costs. “The pain and grief we are experiencing is unimaginable, and we are struggling to find the strength to move forward,” the family wrote.
