A Michigan man is facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly pointed a loaded handgun at three nurses taking a break outside a hospital and threatened to shoot them, according to police.
Walter Dwhite Smith, 31, was arrested by officers from the Warren Police Department and is currently held at the Macomb County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on June 3 outside Henry Ford Hospital in Warren, Michigan. Three nurses were sitting at an outdoor break table near the emergency room ambulance bay when Smith walked past them, visibly agitated while arguing with someone on his phone.
As the phone argument intensified, Smith allegedly approached the nurses’ table and shouted, “You think I’m f—ing playing? I got three nurses here I can shoot.” He then began counting down from six and pulled out a black handgun, pointing it directly at the nurses. He warned them, “If you take another step, I will shoot you.”
The confrontation ended abruptly when Smith received another call and walked away from the scene on foot. One of the nurses immediately called 911. Officers tracked down Smith later that same day and took him into custody.
Authorities revealed that Smith had visited a federal probation office earlier that same evening for a random drug and alcohol test, where he admitted to consuming alcohol — a violation of his existing probation terms.
Smith faces serious charges including two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon by a prohibited person, brandishing a weapon in public, driving without a valid license, and three counts of felony firearm.
He remains jailed on a federal detainer placed by U.S. Marshals, meaning even if he posts bond, he will not be released. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 25.
The three nurses were unharmed physically but were left shaken by the terrifying encounter.
