103 Degrees. No Heat Index. Just Raw Air. Upstate South Carolina and Western NC Are About to Bake in the Most Dangerous Heat of the Summer

GREENVILLE, SC — The hottest and most dangerous stretch of weather this entire summer is arriving across upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina on Thursday and Friday — and forecasters are making something very clear: these are not heat index numbers. These are actual air temperatures.

Shelby, North Carolina will hit 103 degrees. Forest City climbs to 102. Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Greenwood, and Newberry are all forecast to reach 101 degrees in raw air temperature alone over the next 48 hours.

That distinction matters more than people realize. When the actual air temperature is already sitting at 101 to 103 degrees, the real-feel heat index — once humidity is factored in — pushes those numbers into territory that can kill within hours of unprotected outdoor exposure.

Union will reach 100 degrees. Royston comes in at 99. Even the mountain communities are not escaping the worst of it — Asheville is forecast to hit 97, Hendersonville reaches 94, and Waynesville sees 88 degrees, still dangerously hot for prolonged time outdoors.

Forecasters are describing Thursday and Friday as the hottest back-to-back days the region has seen all summer. For anyone who works outdoors, walks pets, cares for children, or simply lacks air conditioning at home, this two-day window carries a serious risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Residents across the region are urged to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, drink water consistently throughout the day, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles for any length of time — interior car temperatures can become lethal within minutes when outside air tops 100 degrees.

Check on elderly neighbors and family members who may not have access to cooling. If you do not have air conditioning at home, find your nearest public cooling center and use it Thursday and Friday.

This heat is not a forecast to scroll past. For this region, this week, these temperatures are as serious as it gets.
